⬜ Spay or neuter your pet. Did you know that one un-spayed female cat and her offspring can lead to 370,000 kittens a year?
⬜ Adopt a fur-baby from a rescue shelter. Virtually any breed of dog can be found in a shelter or in a breed-specific rescue group.
⬜ Buy eco-friendly pet food and care products. Look out for are locally made products that use natural ingredients with recyclable and / or recycled packaging.
⬜ Bulk Buy. To keep your pet’s environmental “pawprint” small, buy pet food in bulk quantities whenever possible.
⬜ Recycle your pet food containers or buy food in biodegradable packaging. Not all pet food packaging is recyclable, so be sure to check before you buy
⬜ Donate gently used collars, leashes, beds, clothing, bowls or toys to a local animal shelter or rescue organisation.
⬜ Use biodegradable poo bags. Plastic poo bags take anywhere from 10 to 100 years to degrade.
⬜ Try natural cat litter to avoid the silica clay commonly used in supermarket brands. Try wood shavings or recycled newspaper.
⬜ Consider eco-friendly pet toys or DIY your own pet toys! Look for balls, bones, and other chewy toys that are made from non-toxic rubber and recycled materials. (Check the labels for the materials) You can play for hours without an impact on the environment.
⬜ Put some thought into your pets beds. Pet beds are often made with really shocking materials. Read the labels carefully and look for pet beds stuffed with post-consumer recycled materials and covers fashioned out of organic cotton, hemp, or recycled fabrics.
⬜ Take the lead. Most dog leashes are made of nylon. Nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas associated with global warming, is emitted during the production of nylon. Rather choose leashes and collars made with canvas, hemp, or other recycled materials for your pets.
