David Torr – Multrepreneur Meteor!

Self-confessed as chaotic and stubborn, it takes not one, but two hands to count the six times David Torr, now a 26-year-old millionaire, was expelled from the better schools in the country. Voted by his copywriting peers at Red and Yellow as “most likely to end up in prison”, you too would bet confidently that these accolades would set up a failure-to-launch tale. As ex-teacher Morag Wallace at Reddam House once predicted: “the one who has the potential to be a world-changer but would never aspire to anything because of his delinquency”. Today, you’ll meet an ambitious, humble and charismatic multrepreneur, who even Wallace is thrilled to congratulate. Advertising powerhouse Ogilvy & Mather turned David Torr away in his younger years, only to ironically invite him to address them under the title of “Recipes for Success” just last month.

Thriving across a diverse array of sectors, David Torr was involved in the inception of Bihari Restaurant, and has subsequently founded UCOOK, Solace Holdings and the Eden Experience.

What are you most passionate about?

Whilst it might seem fairly clichéd and a little too predictable, food is what I am most passionate about.

What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?

Starting a restaurant at 17 … it didn’t pan out as expected.

What makes you angry?

The rich and and their majorities’ resistance to commit to anything greater then the satisfaction of the ego. It is both saddening and frustrating.

If you inherited an acre of land what would you do with it?

Create a commune

Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?

Hunter

How many pairs of shoes  do you own?

About 4 maybe 5

If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?

Melanzane parmigiana with a light leafy salad sided with ricotta stuffed artichokes.

How would people communicate in a perfect world?

With their hearts and not their heads.

What do you work toward in your free time?

Finding a quiet place

If you woke up and had 300 unread emails and could only answer 30 of them, how would you choose which ones to answer?

Those that are most important to my business

Name 3 things in nature you find most beautiful.

The sky on a clear night at dusk, the biggest of trees when they rustle in the wind (sound and visual), birds flying over head during sunset.

Have you used plastic bags for your shopping in the last two weeks?

Yes unfortunately recently I had to make a distressed purchase for a dinner party and did not have my go to bag present.

What would you say are some small steps that people can take to improve their relationship to the environment?

To come to terms with the reality, this being that the planet does not have the capacity to support us all, we must either change or eventually die out – this eventuality I speak of is 1000 years away but 80. So protect your children and start caring.
