Bernhard Lembeck – Painting Green like Nature Does!

Photo of Bernhard

Born and raised in Germany in a family of either farmers or academics, Bernhard always had a keen interest in Biology and Nature but somehow started his professional career as a chemist in the petro-chemically orientated paint industry. Always eager to get out of the nest, he came to South Africa in 1983 to work for the local paint and allied chemical industry.

Bernhard returned to Germany in 1990, but it was not until the conventional paint company he used to manage lost sizeable volumes of paint to natural paint makers that he became intrigued by the idea of making paints and coatings from all natural ingredients and without petro-chemicals.

As it happened, Africa was calling and he returned to South Africa in 1998 to start ProNature – a company that focuses on the development and manufacture of natural wood and wall coatings. These days ProNature touches many more sectors of the green market, having branched out to provide cleaning and caring products and will soon even offer truly natural body care products.

If you had a theme song, what would it be?

Blackbird by the Beatles

What is the biggest risk you have ever taken?

Self-employment in a country with no established market.

If Mars were liveable, would you accept a one-way ticket there?

Yes, believe they do not have to wear masks there!

If you were given one thousand acres of land what would you do with it?

Keep two acres, build a house from locally available materials, and become self-sufficient and declare the leftover 998 acres a private nature reserve with no access to anyone.

Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

About 20 of which I wear 1. These days it is flip-flops and the others are remnants of my former corporate days.

If we came to your house for dinner, what would you prepare for us?

Am an Asian spicy soup man! Ramen a la Bernhard with lots of greens from our garden!

How would people communicate in a perfect world?

From a distance

When you have 30 minutes of free time – how do you pass it?

If you woke up to 300 unread emails, how would you prioritise which ones to answer?

Clients first and whoever wrote first will be answered first!

Where do you go and what do you do to find peace and recharge?

Family and Garden

If you could know the absolute answer to one question, what question would you ask?

Why do humans NOT learn from their errors?

If you could write one new law that everybody had to obey, what would it be?

All girls and boys are to receive equal opportunities to a free education!

What, if anything, have you ever re-gifted?

Bottle of whiskey and a book! With the current alcohol prohibition, I would think twice about giving away the whiskey though!

What is the most interesting thing you have seen or read this week?

Trump wearing mask!

What skill or craft  would you like to master?

Playing guitar!

If you could dedicate your life to solving one problem, what would it be?
