Sadly, Covid lockdown level 3 resulted in the cancellation of the steam festival (about which we have posted below) in South Africa for Easter – and February – BUT the GOOD NEWS is, Sandstone remains open for smaller, private events.
To celebrate the wonders of steam and narrow-gauge railways, the Sandstone Easter Steam Festival takes place once again from 2 to 5 April 2021. Visitors will be able to delight in the unsurpassed beauty of the Eastern Free State, riding steam trains all day on the 30km railway bordering Lesotho, with the majestic Maluti mountains framing the postcard-perfect location. Taking us back to a time when life was slower and we had the luxury of savouring it from our seat on a steam train, watching fields of sunflowers, cosmos and corn, with panoramic mountains as a backdrop …
The unique vintage steam and heritage museum, walking tours, and highly productive farmland, toiled by a team of 36 working oxen, are just some of the many attractions at Sandstone Estates. Highlights of the steam festival will include train rides all day from 10am, and the Mountain Wanderer train will run daily at 3.30pm (duration 2 hours).
The February event was regrettably cancelled due to lockdown level 3 restrictions, so it is with great pleasure that the event was able to be rescheduled to April, however, please note that this Easter event is subject to relaxation of the Covid 19 regulation on gatherings. Please check our website or Facebook page for further details after March 15th.
